Business Advice for Those Who Own Their Own Business

Since Frippin Dave is far from successful, this section cannot possibly claim to offer any advice on how to succeed in business. Unlike those who have the ability to identify the positive traits that lead to success, Frippin Dave doesn't have a clue. I recognize that being successful in business is next to impossible. There are thousands of factors, luck being a huge one, that play into success--or failure. I have seen a lot of people whom I believe do not have the fortitude to be in business. So, I offer advice to anyone that is starting her own business. Like all of Frippin Dave's other advice, this section is useless.

Please do not go into business if:

You tend to blame outsiders, or outside forces, for your situation. You may be accurate in your assessment, but you must operate with the delusion that you are able--and in control.

Think that shrinking, or making your business smaller, is a good strategy when facing tough times. This may be a reasonable strategy for large corporations. But, for the small businessman, shrinking is a step towards the end. Either believe in what you are doing and march forward, or close down. Treading water only makes you shark bait.

See negative trends in your industry as an impedement to business. If you do not see all of the problems of your industry as an opportunity then get out. Those problems will swallow you.

Have little stomach for bad times or bad news. The artist, John Giorno, has a series of prints that exclaim, "Bad News is Always True." To be in business is to convince yourself that the odds are in your favor and you are uniquely talented. However, that delusional stance must be tempered with a willingness to face bad news and times. Being averse to bad news makes it impossible to face the reality of your situation. Hiding from bad situations is a sure sign of bankruptcy, both moral and financial.

Think that the money will come easy. Even for those of incredible success, be prepared to work A LOT and continuously. If you are not engaged at all times, then your business will fail. To paraphrase George W. Bush, "it's hard work."

Only wish to do your your business and not deal with the administrative. Even if you have someone to do this stuff, you must be engaged in all aspects of your business. You have to know how what you do connects to every aspect of your business and be prepared to deal with that.
